Missed Something? The Makeup Policy

Summer 2026. What to do when life happens — the excused-absence makeup procedure, step by step.

Life happens — people get sick, family emergencies come up, things break. This page is the plain-language version of the makeup policy so you know exactly what to do (and what happens next) when you miss something.

If you have an excused absence

  1. Tell us promptly. Post a private note to the instructor on Piazza explaining the situation. Sooner is better than later.
  2. Complete the work within 3 days of the original deadline and submit it to Gradescope. It will show as late — that’s expected; don’t panic.
  3. Come to the next Thursday Q&A session and be ready to answer a few questions about the work you submitted.
  4. Once you’ve walked through it successfully, the late flag is removed and your grade is released.

The 3-day submission window and the Thursday oral are separate steps. If your absence was on a Thursday, submit by Sunday and do the oral the following Thursday — that’s completely fine.

One important note: if you submit but skip the Thursday conversation, your grade stays held until the oral happens. The conversation is the last step, not an optional extra.

What needs an oral, and what doesn’t

  • In-class activities and assessments — anything normally verified live in class — require the Thursday Q&A oral before the grade is released.
  • GAIEs are completion-graded, so no oral is needed. Just submit within 3 days.
  • Projects — makeup orals are scheduled separately; the instructor will arrange a time with you.

If you added the course late

You automatically get a 5-day extension from your official enrollment date for work you missed. Contact the instructor to sort out the details. No oral is required unless the missed work was originally verified live.
